AREA COUNTY INDUSTRIAL WIND TURBINE SETBACK DISTANCES

When many Indiana counties began adopting wind ordinances, large wind farms were just beginning to move into more populated areas. Wind developers have continued to move into more and more densely populated areas, so the ill effects of placing turbines amongst residents are becoming increasingly known. Numerous northern Indiana counties have revised their ordinances in the past several years. PDF

Allen CountyLarge wind energy conversion systems are not permitted by right, nor eligible for a special use under the provisions of this ordinance. Any wind energy conversion system meeting one or more of the following criteria shall be considered a large wind system: a nameplate capacity (manufacturer's rating) of more than 50 Kilowatts per system, a total height of more than 60 feet, or a swept area of more than 40 feet.
Adams County 1320' from non-participant property line (ordinance language states that written permission must be obtained from every person who's property lies within 1/4 mile {1320'} of a turbine - thus, if someone does not want to participate, a turbine could be located no closer than 1320' from their property line)
Boone County As of July, 2014, Boone County's zoning laws prohibit wind turbines
Dekalb County 1300' from property line, 1500' from residential structure
Grant CountyAugust 2014 - Wildcat Windfarm terminated. Moratorium in effect. No wind farms are permitted nor can be permitted. Wind ordinance to be revised.
Howard County 1500' from non-participant residence, 1250' from participant. August 14, 2014 Howard County terminated their Development Agreements with Wildcat Wind Farm II, LLC
Marshall CountyIndustrial Wind development prohibited
Noble County 3960' (3/4 mile) from property line
